How to Install Tile Board

How to Install Tile Board1 How to Install Tile BoardWall paneling is one of the great yet tiring pleasures of home renovation. Normally people use two types of decorative wall paneling like bead board and tile board. Bead boards are generally distinguished by thin vertical lines which help in hiding the seams between the panels. These boards can be seen mostly in laundry rooms, children’s rooms, and in nice dining rooms, where the boards do not go up to the ceilings. But people prefer t install tile boards as those do not come off easily like bead boards and also they are comparatively decent-looking. The tile boards are also available in a number of varieties with light-shades and pastels. These boards are also very popular due to their easy installation process. But still you cannot install these decorative boards directly onto the studs or masonry. For installing on studs you will have to use a base of hardboard, MDF, plywood, or drywall.

Tile boards are mostly water-resistant due to their melamine top. But only the front side of a tile board resists water while the back side does not. Also the tile board can be ruined as its sides can suck up water readily. So while installing the tile board, ensure that its edges are covered. Also you have to keep in mind that the tile boards have practically zero structural value as they are very thin materials which can range from 1?8″ to 3?16″. Further, these boards are made of MDF, and thus may contain chemicals like phenol, phenol resorcinol, melamine formaldehyde-based, or polyvinyl acetate.
Also while being installed on plaster the board can hold some but not much of the plaster. Also the tile boards can be installed only on a flat and finished surface, and can never be installed on studs or furring strips. If the surface is not flat and finished, it will eventually result in creating and showing ugly lines through its thin material.

Instructions

  1. The tile boards are much popular due to their easy installation process. The board can simply be glued down over a flat surface and its edges can be sealed using silicone caulk or similar edging materials.
  2. Before installing the tile board, condition the room where you are planning to install it for at least 48 hours.
  3. Also you have to ensure that you have got solid and nearly flat gypsum drywall walls for installing the tile board. If there is moisture-wicking, you will fail to install the tile board straight onto any kind of masonry wall like cinderblock and brick. For doing the masonry work you have to install first furring strips and then drywall you can install the tile board.
  4. Also you have to take proper note of the tile board spacing. You have to leave a gap of 3?16″ between two panels and a gap of 1?16″ between panel edge and any outer edge like a wall, floor, or molding. These gaps will help in avoid buckling of the panels on the tile board.
  5. Also avoid using nails to adhere the tile board to the wall. Use some adhesive to adhere the tile board to the wall. Use some silicon caulk also to cover the seams and edges of the tile board after installation.
