How to Install Solar Panels
With power problems everywhere, solar panels are becoming a welcome source of power in every place. It involves harnessing the energy from the sun and using it in our daily lives. These solar panels use photovoltaic cells to transform the energy of the sun to direct current which can be used to power up electric appliances. You can also use a battery bank which will store the energy for later use. It is usual to mount the solar panels on the roofs of houses but you can also use a rack to expose it to the sun. You have to be careful of keeping the solar panels in such a way that it gets the maximum sunlight. A little shade will even diminish the efficiency of the solar panel. South is the most favorable direction to keep the panels and north the least. Let us learn about the procedure for installing the solar panels.
- Don’t make the mistake of installing the solar panels without taking prior permission from the authorities. If you are living in an apartment, then consult with the person in charge whether you can do the job. If you install the panels without obtaining permission from relevant authorities, then you might end up bringing down all your hard work.
- Depending on the place we live, we have to tilt the solar panels to receive the maximum amount of sun at the relevant latitude. Usually, the panels are tilted to the same degree as the latitude of the place. This is true up to 25 degrees latitude. From 25 to 40 degrees latitude, you have to add another 5 degrees of tilt to the latitude of the place. Over 40 degrees latitude, 20 degrees of tilt have to be added.
- Now let us consider the process of setting up the solar panels. Use a stud finedr to locate the rafters in the roof. Place the mounts on these rafters about 48 inches apart. Make sure that the mounts are in a straight line.
- Use a pilot bit to drill holes in order to secure the mounts to the rafters. This will not allow the rafters to split up. Stainless steel lag bolts can be used to keep the mounts in place. Roof flashing placed over each mount will not allow any seepage in the roof.
- Fix metal rails to the mounts with the help of stainless steel bolts. Next the metal rails have to be connected to the aluminum solar racks to allow the solar panels to rest on them. The whole system should leave some space between the rack and the roof. Air should be allowed to pass freely under the rack system.
- It is better if you can set up solar panels in groups instead of doing the same job a number of times. Manufacturers provide their own hardware to install the solar panels. Make sure that the racking system is thoroughly secured to the roof and the entire codes are followed for keeping the home safe.
- After installing the solar panels, connect them all together through the junction box provided. The wire which emerges from the system has to run through an electrical conduit like the charge controller. You can now close all the junction boxes. Your solar panel is ready for use.
You will feel happy with your effort and can use the energy for lighting up your home and also to power up many electrical appliances.
