Though there are several tried and tested ways of preparing chicken, grilling is one method that brings out the best in this meat. In this article we shall know the method of grilling chicken pieces as well as a whole chicken. So grab your apron and get ready to cook some yummy and tasty chicken grills that are easy and simple to make. There are certain things that are needed for grilling chicken. They are as mentioned below:

  • Chicken- whole and pieces
  • Fresh herbs
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Olive oil
  • Charcoal
  • Grill
  • Grilling utensils
  • Cutting board

Let us first deal with the grilling method of chicken pieces. Have a look at the below mentioned points to have a better understanding of the process:

  • Take the chicken pieces and rinse them thoroughly with cold water. You can use paper towels for drying them off. Take some salt and pepper as seasoning on the chicken pieces. Do not forget to rub in some olive oil on the chicken pieces before grilling them.
  • Incase you are using a charcoal grill, then prepare a bed of medium hot coals. However if you are using your gas grill, turn its heat to medium high. You can take the help of stiff wire brushes for cleaning the hot grill grates. Do ensure that the grill grates are clean before you use them. Now you have to oil the grill rack. This can be done by using a small and clean towel and holding it with tongs and then using it to oil the grill racks.
  • Take the chicken pieces and place them on the grill with their skin down. Turn the pieces several times and continue cooking them for about half an hour. Do not cover the chicken pieces while cooking them. Keep on cooking the pieces till they turn golden brown and the meat turns delicate. After about 20 minutes of cooking the chicken pieces, you can add the barbeque sauce to them.
  • Your grilled chicken pieces are ready. You can check the doneness of the meat by cutting through the middle of any random piece of the chicken.

Let us now know about the grilling method of a whole chicken. The method is as mentioned below:

  • You shall have to begin by removing the giblets from the cavity of the chicken. After having done that, rinse the chicken under cold running water. Use paper towels to dry it off. Use 2 tbsp of freshly minced basil, cilantro, rosemary, sage, thyme along with some salt and pepper as the seasoning on the chicken. Ensure that the whole chicken is covered with the seasoning properly. Incase you are using charcoal grill, start raking the coals to one side. Make sure that you do not grill the chicken over the coals but next to them. However if you are using a gas grill, turn it into high heat.
  • Use the same method of cleaning the grills as explained above. The method of oiling the grill racks is also the same as mentioned while grilling the chicken pieces. Take the whole chicken and place it with its breast down on the side of the grill which is unheated. Cover the meat and cook it for about half an hour. After the skin turns golden brown, you can turn the sides and cook for another 30 minutes by covering the chicken.
  • You can use a meat thermometer to check the doneness of the chicken or else you can cut through the middle of the meat to check whether it has cooked properly or not. Let the chicken sit for about 15-20 minutes before you start carving it.
