However be very careful while removing the wood piles and other debris from the ground as they might cut or bruise you. It is very essential to cover oneself in protective clothing while doing this task.
For the purpose of protecting your house from mice you shall also have to make sure that all the vents and the screenings are in order. If not, then make efforts to repair them immediately so that the mice do not enter through them. You shall also have to crosscheck all the crawl space doors to ensure that they fit well and do not allow any space for mice to sneak through. Incase the walls in your house are of stone or bricks, you can use cement fill near the entrances whereas incase of wooden walls, one can use sheet metal collars. All those pipes and drains that enter and exit the house are to be inspected and repaired if needed. Drains and pipes serve as a safe haven for mice and it is therefore very essential to keep them clean and repaired. If you notice any cracks or crevices around the foundation area and eaves then make sure that they are filled with caulk. One can also use foam or steel wool for this purpose. However keep in mind that steel wool can rust.
Next in place is your kitchen that needs to be cleaned up and protected against mice. You shall have to begin by ensuring that all the dry food items are placed in air tight containers. Do not ever keep any food items in the open that can attract mice to infect them. If you own pets or birds then take care to keep the pet food and bird seed in sealed containers. Any fallen bird seed needs to be cleaned up from the ground and trashed. One also needs to be particular about the trash containers. Make sure that all your trash containers have tight fitting lids covering them. This will prevent mice from invading your house. Another very important thing to be kept in mind is to make sure that you do not sweep off or vacuum any mouse droppings. Use a disinfectant to mist the dropping and then use a paper towel to wipe it off.
You should only place any traps or poison pellets in that area where you have seen the mice. Keep the baits as close to the mouse hole as possible. Ensure that the traps and baits are checked daily. Once you have caught a mouse in the trap, use gloves to remove it and then dispose it off in a trash can by wrapping it in some newspaper.
