- It is very important to keep all your food items and edible goods under cover. It is equally important to note that fruit flies breed on your food by thriving on it. If you cover the food, then the breeding of fruit flies gets curbed too.
- Avoid keeping any unattended or uncovered food items on your kitchen cabinets for a long time. You shall also have to remember that moisture helps in breeding of flies therefore check in your house for any damp spots or puddles.
- Remember to keep all your sponges and cleaning clothes covered. Whenever they are left unused, make sure that they are dry. Flies get attracted to the moisture and food particles that get stuck to these cleaning clothes and sponges.
- Do not forget to empty your trash cans regularly. Avoid them to get overflowed with garbage. Ensure that these bins have cover on them so that flies do not have access to the waste in them.

You can choose to close down all possible sources of entry for fruit flies. Use screens on your doors and windows and seal any cracks that might be present on your doors and windows. - Many a times fruit flies take residence in your kitchen sink. If this is the case, fill up your sink with ammonia based cleaners and allow the cleaner to trickle down the drain slowly. The longer the cleaner stays inside the drain of the sink, the better it is.
- Use a narrow necked bottle and fill one inch or two with fruit vinegar. To this you need to add some cooling oil or liquid soap. This bottle should be left in an area where you notice fruit flies. Fruit flies get attracted to the smell of fruit vinegar and the oil and soap catches them if they try to sit on the bottle. One can also use a glass instead of a bottle. You can close the glass with a plastic wrap and make some holes in it.
- You can also buy a Fly Zapper. Flies have a tendency to get attracted to the light of the zapper and then die. However make sure that all the other sources of light are switched off while the zapper is on. This makes the Fly Zapper more attractive to the flies and they start flying towards it.
