How to Get Rid of Chipmunks
They are cute little creatures that can also be destructive. People who have never had any problem may find chipmunks delightful but gardeners and lawn care people know well how dangerous are these rodents for the plants. These small creatures can cause destruction by digging holes in your lawn, nibbling your leafy bushes and flowers,
nesting in the walls and weakening the foundation of your house. So, if you are facing a problem due to these animals, learn about the ways to get rid of them. Here are some of the methods that you can try.
Instructions
- One of the best ways to get rid of them is to trap them alive and take them to some other site that is away from residential area. There are readymade live traps available that help in capturing the rodent. The traps in form of cages are provided with trip-wire doors and spring-loaded doors that close once the chipmunks enter the cage. You can make use of flower seeds or other things as bait for attracting the animal towards the cage. However; make sure to find out the laws about the disposing of these live creatures, rodents.
You can also try out the bucket trap method. For this you will require a large size bucket half filled with water, a plank that will act as ramp and some sunflower seeds. Float the seeds on the water surface and also place some of them on the plank. These seeds will definitely attract the chipmunks. However, as they will jump towards the seeds, they will fall into the bucket and won’t be able to get out of it. You can even use rat traps to capture the rodent once it gets busy with the seeds or simply use peanut butter as glue on the trap.- Some experts who work in the animal-disposal area believe that using natural items at sites can help you keep the chipmunks away from those areas. For instance, pepper sprinkles or spray at the desired spots or areas in the lawn and gardens can force the rodents to turn away from the protected area. This is because the animals do not like the odor or effect of pepper and hence are most likely to move away from the place quickly.
- Chipmunk menace can also be avoided by stapling hardware cloth around the edges and holes where they are frequent. Placing or burying a hardware cloth below the surface of the surrounding soil too can increase the effectiveness of the barriers.
- If you fail in your efforts to trap and dispose them off, contact the animal control experts. Explain them your problem (chipmunks are carriers of disease and also a source for attracting other such rodents). They will definitely help you to come out of the problem.
