How to Get Rid of Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants are destructive pests that are often found in damp areas, wooden structures and even in garbage. Their presence at home or even outside can really be upsetting. So, if you have found their trail at your place, then take effective measures to eliminate these pesky insects before they become permanent members of your home. Here are some guidelines that will help you get rid of carpenter ants that may be breeding or dwelling near your surroundings.
Instructions
Outside
- Outdoor carpenter ants can be best controlled with baits. Advance Carpenter Ant Bait or Gourmet Liquid Ant Bait is the suitable bait that is effective for all species of carpenter ants.
- Use these baits in smaller quantities and make sure to apply them close to the sources of the ant nests.
- As you start with small quantities (tablespoon size) of the bait, keep checking periodically to see if the ants are picking it up. If so, then you can apply some more bait. Apply as much bait as the ants will consume.
- If you are dealing with the ant’s nest which may contain thousands of ants then use bait in larger quantity. The quantity to be applied will depend upon the size of the ants’ colony.
- You can also spray or paint sticky barriers (made out of tangle foot products) on trees and plants. These barriers will thwart ants from climbing up stems and trunks to feed.
Inside
- Ant colonies located inside wall voids, window sills and other spots can be best treated by using products like Timbor or Nibor-D. These pesticides are very effective and safe to use. The only potential hazard is indigestion, so make sure it is not within the reach of your kid.
- Sprinkle borax powder on ant trails, especially in cracks and near entryways to prevent them from moving in.
- You can also prepare a repellent at home by mixing 1 tsp. boric acid with 2 1/2 fluid oz. corn syrup or honey. Heat the above ingredients until the boric acid dissolves completely. Pour it in an eye dropper and then add an equal amount of water to it. Drop the solution at the ant’s colonies for several days.
- Boil some water and pour it over the mounds and into the cracks where you expect the ants dwell.
