How to Freeze-Dry Petals

How to Freeze Dry Petals3 How to Freeze Dry PetalsFreeze-drying is the only process for successfully removing water from an organic substance and similar items without causing any damages to the cell structure and losing any of the volatile components. Further, no chemical is used in the entire process of freeze-drying flower petals which results is producing bio-degradable petals. The petals of different flowers can be freeze-dried, but most of the people prefer to freeze-dry rose petals. These freeze-dried rose petals provide beautiful settings without color staining and watering issues. The freeze-drying process normally takes around four weeks of time for completion. The only equipment you need for this process is a freeze-dryer. Even there are professional and lengthier processes for drying the petals, but using some simple steps you can achieve the realistic petals for using during different occasions.

Instructions

  1. You have to cut the roses few days before starting the freeze-drying process and allow then sufficient time to open up completely. Select roses of high quality and health to get better petals. Once the roses have opened fully you have to remove the petals from their stems. While removing the petals do the process do it gently and use your hands. Now separate the petals based on their quality and appearance. While choosing the petals make sure to select only well-developed and fully-opened petals which are free from browning and wilting.
  2. Now place the selected petals into a freeze-dryer and set the dryer at a temperature of -20 degrees Fahrenheit. The dryer will simultaneously freeze the petals and vacuum the oxygen form the chamber. The petals will be freed immediately due to the extreme temperature and lack of oxygen inside the chamber.
  3. Keep the freeze-drying process continued. After freezing the petals completely, bring those back to standard room temperature. Over the next two weeks increase the temperature of the chamber slowly and gradually. Due to lack of oxygen the water in the petals will directly change from solid ice to gaseous water vapor. This sublimation process will allow rose petals to maintain their original shapes without causing any wilting or decomposing.
  4. After freeze-drying the petals remove those from the chamber and place them in a container or storage box. If you are storing the rose petals appropriately then those freeze-dried petals will last for months. While storing the petals store them in a cool and dry place which is also away from high temperature, humidity, and sunlight. The moist condition of a freezer can damage the roses. So never store the freeze-dried rose petals inside the freezer.
  5. You can also expose the freeze-dried rose petals to a little amount of humidity to make them soft. When you touch the rose petals you will feel somewhat hard. Expose to humidity for a much shorter period. You can simple soften the rose petals simply by putting those on a bathroom shelf or counter while taking a shower. The exposure will soften the petals gently along with brightening their color. You have to ensure that the petals are not too much exposed to humidity as it may result in undoing the entire freeze-drying process and cause wilting and browning in the rose petals.
