How to Fix Zipper
Be it a shopping bag, a handbag, a laptop case or your jeans and trousers, a zipper is something that you will find every where. Due to its ease-of-use feature, a zipper is used in several items. However, the real problem crops up when it breaks or gets separated. In such a case, what most people do is either discard it or replace it. But now you don’t really need to run to the market to get your zipper replaced or repaired; you can get it fixed yourself. Following are the instructions that will help you fix a zipper:
Instructions
Sometimes when the teeth on a zipper don’t line up right, they cause problem with the zipper. You can fix it up by following these steps
- Firstly pry off the metal stop of the zipper that is placed at its bottom (intended to stop the slider when you open the zip). Use a pair of pliers for doing this. However, if do not have pliers, you can also make use of screwdriver or even a blunt kitchen knife.
- Now zip the zipper all the way down, stopping just below the last of the teeth that is aligned. Do not pull it off completely.
- Rearrange the teeth of the zipper with your fingers to ensure all the teeth are aligned properly. No single side of the zipper should be bunched up, if there is any then simply straighten them out. Now slowly zip up the zipper halfway and see
whether the teeth are locking together or not. - Once you are satisfied that there is no problem in the zipper teeth, then sew around the area where the metal stopper was attached. The main idea is to replace it with thread. Make at least six stitches around the bottom of the zipper and then tie a knot on the back side of the zipper.
- Test once again by pulling the zipper all the way to the top. If your zipper gets misaligned again some other day, then simply remove the stitching with a seam ripper and repeat the above process.
- Apart from the misalignment of the zipper teeth there are also problems caused due to gaps in sliders. If the gap between two sections of the slider appears to be wider than required (compare to a properly functioning slider on another similar zipper), crimp the two sections gently with pliers. Make sure not to squeeze the pliers too hard. If the two sections come to close than required then simply pry them apart by using a screwdriver blade.
So, next time your expensive leather purse or jeans show problems with the zipper do not toss them away. Simply try the above given tips and fix it up in no time.
