How to End a Letter
Sometimes a letter ends quite abruptly leaving the reader wondering whether there was something that the writer forgot to mention. Therefore, the ending should begin with a summary of what you have already written and end with closing remarks which talk about the future action that you will be taking. There is a subtle way of making your letter sound complete. Letters can be both personal or for business. Informal letters should end with a more personal touch and you should be candid in saying what you think. You may want to overdo this sometimes, especially in love letters. So let us learn how to end a letter so that it sounds just appropriate.
- When you come to the end of the letter then create a concluding paragraph to give your final remarks.
- You can again write about the purpose of the letter in the last paragraph. If it is a business letter you are writing then profess your interest in the job you have applied for, give a parting congratulatory expression to your colleague or apologize once again for your wrongdoings.
- The last paragraph should emphasize the desired action that you are interested in. It may express your desire for setting up a meeting or asking for a refund of your unutilized money. This will make the reader sure of what you want.

If there is an upcoming event, then refer to it in the end. It can be a meeting scheduled for some time later or even a telephonic conversation. If it is an informal letter, then it can end with a desire to meet again, like “hoping to see you soon”. - The concluding paragraph should be followed by a gap and then the closing remark. If you have started the letter with “Sir”, then you should end with “Yours Faithfully”. And if you have addressed the person with his name, then you can end with “Yours Sincerely”. If it is just a good friend, then use “Best Wishes”. These words should have a comma after them.
- Leave some space and then type your name in business letters. The space left in between will carry your signature. Write the position you are representing below your name in business letters. Write the full details like the department and the company you are working for.
- You can then add the final touch by signing the letter. Your first and last names should be written in business letters whereas the informal ones should only carry your first name.
- There are certain abbreviations which can be written at the end of the letter after your name. It can be “cc” to send a copy to someone else. “Enc” will denote inclusion of another document with the letter. Similarly, “P.S.” will help you to write a postscript on your letter.
Now you can write the ending of a letter without any problem. Do not make the ending quite the same as your introduction. Just touch upon the important points and say them in a different way. Your letter will certainly be a pleasure to read.
