How to Draw Rocks

How to Draw Rocks How to Draw RocksDrawing is a unique art that requires skill and practice. One should also have some knowledge of geometric shapes and measurements. Then you can create wonders with your pencil and paper. You have to imagine the picture to be drawn and try to visualize it. Then the next thing is go for a rough sketch of the thing you are going to draw.

How to draw rocks? Seems to be easy, but when you make start it seems to be complicated. For you have to take into consideration various basic points. In the first place you have to pay heed to different types of rocks like sandstone, shale, limestone, volcanic and boulder rocks. Then comes sketching which plays an important role. Select some photos of rocks and make rough sketch of them. You should also have to think of the base that the rock is placed.

If you want to draw a close-up view of rocks, then try to imagine the shape and depth of rocks then you have to create three dimensional forms. The 3-D figures can be best understood by knowing how to draw a solid cube.

Step by step procedure:

  1. To understand the effect of light on the rock, you pick a pebble and place it on the table and let light fall on the pebble from an angle. You can see the shadow of the pebble on the floor and also on the face of the pebble. Set this as a model to draw the rock with the pattern of the shadow on the face and on the ground. The rock can be almost spherical in shape or might be broken in to curves. That can be drawn only by highlighting the shadows.
  2. Once you have drawn the outline of the rock and interior lines breaking into different arcs use shading pencil and lightly give a grey appearance to the shade. Take care to see that it is not too dark. The shape of the shadow will give the realistic look to the rocks.
  3. Your practice of drawing different rocks gets more realistic as you experiment with various outlines. As rocks do not have definite shapes there is no strict shape but it must have a commonly seen shape like river rocks. When you are drawing a group of rocks take care that ones that you put in the front must cover the backside rocks. Take the same care when you place one on another. This will give you the feel of real 3-D drawing. The general shape can be an oval but it need not be perfect. Place the larger ones in the front obscuring the vision of the back ones. Use intelligent overlapping of rocks’ outlines to enhance the effect.
  4. The shading lines are really important part of rock drawing and you must consider the shade and curvature aspects when drawing the shading lines. Do not use crosshatching as that will look clumsy. The lines must be done with light pencil where the shades are light. The narrow spacing will give a realistic feeling.
  5. Coloring the rocks will add life to the drawing but in nature you find few color combinations but you can have some stripes for sedimentary rocks. The shading thickness of same color is also a way to use colors to enhance the beauty of rock drawings.

It is easy but a little practice is essential to learn how to draw rocks beautifully.
