Normally the principles of drawing cartoons are the same as drawing figures but with cartoons we can incorporate the fun factor along with drawing. First you will need to draw the basic shapes by using a pencil. Draw an oval which shall act as the head of each character. Remember that if you are drawing a female cartoon, then add a “V” shape for the chin. For drawing the chest, you will have to create large oval shapes just below the head. For the hips and the waist part, you will need to draw a small upside down triangle shape. Here also you have to keep in mind that if you are drawing a female character then you have to make the hips a little bit wider.
Just add simple lines for the limbs and draw small circular guidelines on the ends of each arm for the purpose of hands. For drawing the feet part, you will need to draw small triangular guidelines at the ends of the legs.
Now is the turn of adding facial details. You can do so by drawing a cross shape over the face which will create a guideline for the facial features. Facial guidelines also help in maintaining the proportions of the details. You will have to thicken the arms, legs and also the bodies of the characters by drawing parallel lines around them. Incase you are drawing an upturned face, then the guideline for that would be to draw the cross shape higher and more towards the left. This is just an example, it is entirely your choice whether you want to draw an upturned face of the cartoon character or not.
You can draw simple shapes for the facial details. For making the nose of the cartoon, you can draw a cone shape near the centre of the cross which will give the impression of a large nose. Draw a flat upside down “V” shape for the moustache of the male cartoon character. You can add the eyes just below the curved line by drawing a circle.
Just draw two curved lines above the eyes which act as the eyebrows and the mouth as a small curved line below the nose. Incase you want to draw female lips of the cartoon character; you can add a flat “M” shape above the mouth and a curved line below it.
The cartoon’s clothing is of great importance to its character. You can draw a deep “V” shape on the chest and draw a vertical line to the bottom of it and a curved line across it for creating the man’s suit. For drawing the female cartoon character’s skirt, you can create a curved line across the top of the chest and another just below the knee.
Add hair to the female character’s head by drawing a curved line around the top and sides of the head. For the male cartoon, you can draw a circle connected to a cylinder on the top of his head which shall act as his top hat.
Make sure to add small details to the cartoons which help in bringing the characters to life. These can be in the form of drawing a bow tie for the male character, buttons, gloves for the female cartoon and shoes. Now you can ink out all the lines that you wish to keep and erase the pencil lines.
