How to Draw Dresses
Are you fascinated by the latest fashion trends and want to sketch the dress that recently captivated your imagination. Well, drawing dresses is a bit tricky; it requires imagination, creativity and patience. If you have these qualities, then you can draw any dress meticulously, recreating the beauty of the dress on a piece of paper.
Though a challenging art for many, if you understand the trick then you can easily master the art. All you need to do is to understand that a dress is made of fabric, which has no real solid shape. Focus on how the shadows and movements affect the dress. You need to carefully identify the drapes, flows and folds to give fine finishing to your sketch.
Following are some of the instructions that can help you to draw a dress, with least errors.
Steps
- Firstly you need to select the design you want to draw. Carefully notice the dress to understand the details that your drawing should not miss.

- Now with the help of a pencil, make a rough sketch of the figure and the dress. It will basically comprise different shapes and curves.
- Determine how their movement will affect the fabric of the dress. Depending upon the kind of dress you are drawing like a loose dress or a tight one, the effect you need to add to your sketch will differ accordingly. If the dress is a loose one, then you will have to pay attention to the flows and folds of the dress. In case of a tight outfit, focus on the curves of the figure.
- Now you can sketch the folds of the dress. Few slanted vertical lines can be used to reflect the flow of the dress out from the waist.
- To give realistic touch to your drawing, establish the darker and the lighter shaded areas of the dress. For the areas that are to be highlighted go for lighter shading and vice versa. Usually the edges of the dress should be a little darker than the other lines you draw for the body part.
- Harden the lines of the folds by darkening the shadows. In most of the dresses, the shadows will look like long triangles with points starting from the waist area.
- Now you can draw the bottom of the dress. For this you need to draw horizontal lines. Depending upon the height of the dress, you can modify the length of the dress.
- To give finishing touch to your drawing add details like pockets, buttons, zippers and embellishments as per the requirement.
- Now you can add color to your drawing. You can make use of watercolors, crayons or simple pencil colors to make your drawing more attractive.
Tips
- Add shadows underneath the bottom of the dress
- Don’t give skin-tight clothing look to a loose outfit, just to avoid drawing folds. Drawing folds are easy; you can master the technique with some practice.
- Feel free to erase. This will allow you to get the exact style that you want to create.
