Whether you want to draw a dog as the centerpiece or as a supplement to the existing scenery, dogs always make drawing all the more fascinating. Drawing dogs is not at all difficult. With just a little bit of practice, one can master the art of drawing dogs. Let us see how we can learn to draw a dog by using color pencils. The things required for it are:
- Color pencils
- Sketch pad
So let’s get on with the act of drawing a dog using color pencils!
- To begin with, let us use a lead pencil to draw the basic shapes of a dog. These shapes are usually the same for every dog, just the proportions change incase you are drawing dogs of different breeds. Draw a triangle upside down and make sure to draw it lightly. Inside the triangle, draw another small upside down triangle which defines the snout area. Now you will need to add a couple of circles for the ears and a square to represent the
chest area. Draw a rectangle which shall represent the rest of the body and remember to draw elongated circles for the leg portions. - After the basic shapes have been drawn out, we have to now refine the drawing. There will be corner and edges in the shapes that you have drawn, just erase them and replace with lines. Take the help of a color pencil now. Use that color which will be the main color for the fur of the dog. Using the color pencil, replace the lines with a more polished shaping of the dog’s body. The shapes that you had initially drawn basically act as place holders for the different proportions of the dog’s features.
- After having finished with the outer body, start working on the nose, eyes and other features of the dog’s face. Shape the snout with a lead pencil so that the nose becomes more prominent. Draw the eyes and then add the brows.
- Taking into consideration the breed of dog that you are drawing, choose the color pencil for the fur. Make the lines stand out while drawing the fur. Do not forget to add some kind of shading to the dog’s midsection and leg joints. This helps in bringing out the body tone. To add more effect, add shadows for giving a 3D impression.
- To give life to your dog, just make the lines of the fur stand out. This gives a more realistic feel to the drawing. Darken the colors around the brows and eyes and ears. Even if you are using one single color, using faint variations of that same color will add tons of effect to your drawing.
