How to Draw Cars
Drawing your favorite car model can be an exciting exercise. You don’t need to be an artist or draftsmen to capture the beauty of your dream car. All you need is to do is to increase your observation and focus on the overall visual of the car rather than the details of the various parts. From simple-shaped cars to latest sleek models, you can easily sketch the cars if you follow a step-to-step method. Following steps mentioned below will help you to create a perfect picture of your choice.
- Carefully observe the model or picture of the car so that you get an idea of its outer framework. Try to focus on the various shapes that comprise the car like the slanted rectangle of the windshield or circles of the wheels. Further, analyze how these shapes and their respective proportions are connected with one another. If you desire, you can also include principal elements in the background to make the picture look more realistic.
- Begin with one rectangle that would represent the base of the car, including the hood and the trunk and then you can continue with other corresponding shapes. It includes shapes of windows, headlights, hubcaps, bumpers and taillights etc.

- Use an HB pencil to lightly sketch the major shapes. Later, you can erase and adjust these shapes to capture the proper perspective. 2B pencil can be used for shading those segments of the car that is to be highlighted. However, 4B pencil can also be used for darker shadings.
- As you continue the process, keep using varying shades of gray. This is most applicable when you are drawing a fast car and you want to emphasize features that characterize speed. You can easily lighten or shape some of your shadings through erasing some of it. It is always better to lighten the shades for the subtle elements so that the vital portions get highlighted.
- Keep checking your reference to ensure you are going right. Be prepared to erase and redraw various segments several times to capture the different parts of the car accurately. Take care while using the eraser; lightly brush away the eraser dust from the drawing without erasing any of the shadings or lines.
- You can give finishing touch to your drawing as per your choice. You can either complete your sketch with a pencil or you can also go for watercolors, markers or colored pencils. Depending on what you select your drawing will have a different look.
- While giving finishing touch to your drawing, you can always add the background details.
Tips to remember
- Firstly focus on the outer structure of the car i.e. the most prominent shapes that form the body of the car before advancing to complex parts
- Be prepared to erase and redraw during the process if you want to capture the perfect image of your dream car.
- If you use material under copyright, then your drawing should only be for personal use.
