How to Download Linux
Linux is a free and open source operating system. As Linux is not a single entity, it works with the GNU Programs. Most versions or distributions of Linux can be freely downloadable from various sources. The Linux operating system can be run on personal computers as well as netbooks.
Linux is mostly preinstalled in certain computers and some times, a separate CD is provided to install it on the system. The various popular distributions of Linux operating system like Ubuntu, Red Hat, Fedora etc. are available for download for free or for a nominal charge.
Make sure you have a faster internet connection for downloading Linux. The process to download the Linux operating system is easy and is mostly downloaded in an ISO image or DVD image format which is required to be burned into a CD or DVD. Your computer can directly boot Linux from the CD.
Steps for downloading Linux (Ubuntu distribution):
- Visit the Linux Webpage (http://www.linux.com/directory/Distributions or http://www.ubuntu.com/).
- Choose the system type you want to download like Desktop, Embedded/Mobile, Enterprise, LiveCD, Popular Distributions and Security Enhanced.
- This would lead to the page, where all the top download sites are listed (http://www.linux.com/directory/Distributions/Desktop).

- Choose the website from which you want to download, for example, we can get the Ubuntu distribution from the official website (http://www.ubuntu.com/).
- Select the edition you want to download. For example, if you want to download for your personal computer, you can choose the ‘Desktop Edition’.
- Click on ‘Get Ubuntu’ to get to the download page.
- Click on ‘Download Now’ to start downloading.
- This would prompt your computer with a popup window that would ask you to save the file.
- Click on ‘Save File’ to save the program to your desired drive or location.
- You may be prompted to purchase a CD based on the edition you require for a nominal amount.
