How to do Body Wraps

How to Do Body Wraps How to do Body WrapsBody wrap is a detoxifying process that cleanses and exfoliates the skin by flushing out toxins from the body. Body wraps help to tone and firm up the skin, and are beneficial for people experiencing loose skin from drastic weight loss programs or post delivery. Therapeutic effects of body wraps also help to relieve joint pains and muscle aches.

A popular spa therapy, body wraps are widely used as a weight reduction tool. The heat produced during the treatment causes excessive perspiration resulting in inch loss from the body. Medical experts, however, claim the weight reduction to be temporary as the lost fluids get replaced by eating and drinking.

Body wraps are expensive, with costs typically ranging between $100 – $300 at most day spas. If you want to save on money and still experience the benefits of a body wrap, try the simple clay body wrap recipe to create your own body wrap at home.

Ingredients to create the wrap solution

  • 1 cup green clay
  • 1/2 cup salt (mineral, epsom or sea salt)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups water

Optional (to soothe muscle aches)

  • 2 tablespoons of an essential oil such as lavender, rosemary sandalwood or grapefruit oil
  • A herbal tea bag such as chamomile, basil or rose petal powder

Method

Boil water in a large pot, add the tea bag and stir in the salt until it dissolves. Add the remaining ingredients and stir. Adjust water if required to create a wet paste. Remove from heat and allow the solution to cool down to the temperature of a warm bath.

Steps to do a body wrap at home

Procure about 15-20 large rolls of elastic (ace) bandages from your chemist. The larger the dimension of the roll, the greater is the skin area you will be able to cover.

  1. You can either purchase a body wrap solution or create your own at home by following the above recipe.
  2. Test the temperature of the wrap solution by mixing hot and cold water. Once it becomes warm enough for application, dip the bandages in the solution.
  3. Remove your clothing and begin wrapping the wet bandages over your body. It is best to begin the wrapping from your ankles and legs and then work upwards towards your upper chest and arms. The wrap should be tight enough but not uncomfortable. Safety pins may be used to fasten the bandage properly.
  4. If available, put on a PVC sweat suit after applying the bandages. This helps trap heat better.
  5. You need to wait for at least an hour before removing the bandages. Have a shower once you remove the wrap. A moisturizing lotion may be applied once you dry off.

Tips to enjoy your body wrap session

  • Body wrap sessions generally tend to be messy with the fluid dripping down. Therefore, its best to take the wrap in the bathtub or on a lounge chair placed inside the bathroom.
  • A warm shower before applying the wrap helps unclog body pores.
  • Arrange for a heater in the bathroom, as you tend to feel cold during the wrap.
  • Try to relax and enjoy your session by listening to your favorite music or reading a book.
  • Have plenty of water before, during and after the wrap to flush out toxins and to stay hydrated.
