Crossword puzzle is not only for enjoyment but it is a very good habit of increasing your vocabulary.  Crossword puzzle provides inspiring and healthy mental challenges. If you like solving the puzzles then you must also be keen to make your own puzzle game to amaze your friends by your intellect and intelligence. Scratching your head and thinking how to create a crossword puzzle? Played for more than enough and now want to build your own games? So let’s discuss how to create a crossword puzzle? To make your own puzzle game seems to be really a tough task but we’ll show you how to do it with an ease.

Read the following steps to learn how to create a crossword puzzle.

  1. To begin with, all you need is a graph paper. Now the question must have arrived that why a graph paper and not any other? Well, it’s simple! Graph paper has the boxed already made on it and it gives symmetry as well. You can go for a plain or any other paper as well, but graph paper simply reduces your work a bit.
  2. Now, the most important thing in creating a puzzle, that is, words that are to be filled in the crossword puzzle. How to get the words that should be used in the crossword puzzle? The answer to this is, jot down all the words that you can think of. They can be any random words like; cushion, doll, movies and newspaper etc. create a list of such words.lg-large-crossword.jpg
  3. Take you graph paper and fill in the graph boxes with the words that you jotted down in the previous step. Fill it in any direction; up, down, right, left. Think of your graph paper as a real scrabble and make your graph paper looks like one by filling the left out boxes with your pen or outlining the filled in boxes with a marker.
  4. You will have to number your words in the graph so that you could refer the hint of the word to a particular place. Starting from the top of your graph start allotting numbers to the words and end it with the end of words.
  5. It’s time to give the players some hint! Going with the numbers, start providing the hints for the words that you have used in creating the crossword puzzle.  Are you confused as to how to give hints? Let’s take an example: 1 across says soap and you have to give a hint of this word. Then you may write “washes the dirt away” or “gives foam and bubbles” or anything that you think should be the hint. Keep it easy to crack but difficult to hold the interest.
  6. After writing down all the hints, check it. Make sure that nothing is left.
  7. Now, take another graph and this time you will only do the outline or fill in the empty boxes with the ink but not the words. Keep the outlining as same as that of you have made in the above steps.
  8. You may make several copies of this only outlined graph depending upon the number of players you have got and keep the master copy with you, which is the original graph that has the words on it.

So, there you go! Now you don’t have to think hard on how to create your crossword puzzle?
