How to Connect Solar Batteries
Solar energy is one of the best forms of renewable energy and a great option to run your electrical appliances at home. One of the easiest ways to get solar energy is to install solar panels on your roof top, which trap energy from the sun. This energy is then stored in a generator and converted into usable power. To use this electricity, it is essential that the solar batteries are correctly connected to the solar panel regulator and to the inverter. Solar panels charge the battery, while the regulator functions as an on/off switch and insures proper charging of the batteries. The batteries provide DC voltage to the inverter, which then converts the DC voltage to normal AC voltage.
Follow the below instructions to connect the solar batteries to your solar panel:
- Batteries may be connected using series or parallel wiring. In series wiring, voltages of different batteries are summed up while the amperage remains the same. A series connection is done by connecting a pair of opposite terminals of different batteries together i.e. positive to negative.
In a parallel connection, the amperage capacity of the batteries is added up while the total voltage remains the same as one of the batteries. A parallel connection is made by connecting like terminals of two or more batteries together i.e. positive to positive and negative to negative.
- Ensure you get deep cell batteries only when using solar power. Deep cell batteries can be charged and discharged number of times. Other batteries, like the ones used in car, will burn out very quickly and may require replacement every alternate day.
- An important thing to keep in mind is that the red wires denote the positive terminal while the black wires are for the negative end. This is also indicated by the (+) and (-) signs. This symbolization holds true in almost all power supplies.
- Measure the correct length of the wire to run from the regulator to the batteries and then cut the wire accordingly with a wire cutter. Generally, a very long wire is not required.
- You next need to connect the regulator to the batteries. The back of the regulator has a battery picture. Connect one end of the wire to the correct slots on the regulator. The red wire must go to the positive (+) terminal and the black wire (-) to the negative. Once the regulator gets connected, remove the wing nuts on the battery and put the red wire on the positive pole of the battery and the black wire on the negative pole.
- Now connect the battery to the inverter. The inverter will have big red and black wires coming out of it. Put the red wire on the positive pole of the battery and the black wire on the negative pole. Replace the wing nuts on the battery post and tighten them to make a secure connection.
- The solar panel battery connection is now complete and you can use your panel to convert sunlight into electricity.
