How to Care For a Baby Bird
There are millions of occasions when you might find a baby bird lying uncared for on the street or in a garden. You will of course, love to take it into your hands and give it warmth. You will hope that you can care enough for it to make it live. But you should also know the right techniques for taking care of the bird. The basic thing you should know about a baby bird is that you should take it to a vet if you find it in the injured state. If it is alive and well, then too don’t give it anything to eat at first. Wait till the bird is warm enough and then give it food and water. Let us find out how to care for a baby bird in the right way.
- See if the bird is feathered or not. If it is not, it has to be wrapped with a towel to give it warmth. Keep a heating pad, a hot baked potato or a hot water bottle inside the towel. Make sure that the hot item inside the towel will remain warm for some time. Place the entire arrangement in a box and wrap the box too with a towel. Try to take the temperature of the baby bird. If it has no feathers, then the temperature should be about 95 degrees and if feathered, then 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
- After you give the baby bird enough warmth, you can think of giving it some fluids. Fluids should always precede solid food. Check the bird’s mouth to see if it is moist. If the bird is dehydrated, it will look reddish in color. You can also check for hydration by pulling up the skin at the back of its neck. The skin should spring back when you release it.
- You have to make the liquid for the bird to have. It is wise not to choose sucrose as many babies are intolerant to it. Measure ¼ cup corn syrup to a container and add a cup of water to it. Add some salt to it. Dip your fingers into the solution and put the drops on top of the baby’s beak. It will try to take some inside without getting asphyxiated. Apart from this, you can try some fruit with high water content. Try giving a very small piece of watermelon to the baby. Bread soaked in sugar water and then squeezed, can also be tried.
- Once the bird gets hydrated, you can think about giving it some solid food. You can dip tiny pieces of bread into water, squeeze them and feed them little by little to the baby. You can get its mouth opened with the fingernail. You can feed it at an interval of 20 minutes.
You will soon see that the bird will be alive and happy. In fact, you might see it begging for food soon. Knowing the right way to take care of the baby bird can help you keep it alive.
