How to Buy Bird Baths

How to Buy Bird Baths How to Buy Bird BathsIf you consider buying a bird bath, then you will be confused by the great variety of bird baths available in the market. There are bird baths of many materials, shapes, sizes and colors. Depending on whether you want a decorative bird bath, a fancy one or a functional one, you can agree to pay the different prices for it. But before you buy a bird bath, you should know the reason behind it.

  • If you need it to attract the birds to bathe in a basic place without much thought about decoration, then you can opt for plastic. This is the most affordable option and it will serve the purpose of a bird bath without trying to make the landscape any better. You can fill the bottom of the plastic bird bath with some sand and then fill it with water. Since plastic is very lightweight, sand will prevent the bird bath from tipping over when the birds sit on it.
  • There can be a better and a little costlier option of the cast-iron bird baths which can make the landscape look nice and also provide the necessary water for the birds to bathe and drink. In case you live in the countryside where there can be wild animals trespassing in the locality, you should secure the bird bath to the ground with ground staples so that the animals don’t tip the bath and cause the water to flow away. Most of the cast iron bird baths have the base pieces filigreed so that you can tuck the staples in.
  • If the intention is more to provide a better landscape and the bathing of the birds holds less priority, then you can think of installing a fountain unit. These fountains look beautiful and can be made from concrete, plastic, faux-stone and cast-iron. But in order to maintain the flow of water in the fountain, you need a power supply. So the placement of the bird bath is vital in the yard.

Tips

  • Once you install the bird bath in the yard, you have to then think of keeping the right amount of water and also keeping it clean. The water should be replaced from time to time.
  • Water in the fountains may not be easy to replace. Hence this water should be treated so that it can be kept clean. The treatment should be safe enough for the birds. You should make sure that the water that you keep in the bird bath is suitable for the animals and birds to drink.
  • Make sure that the depth of water in the bird bath is not too much or else the birds might drown in it.
  • You need to be careful when you install the bird bath as you might attract the birds of prey too, who will feed on these small birds.
  • Unless the water is cleaned regularly, it will be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This can be harmful for humans and the birds too.
  • The bird bath should be kept close to bushes and trees so that in case of any trouble, the birds can flee to the bushes. Since they will find it difficult to fly further with wet wings, there should be bushes nearby to provide protection.
  • Keeping the bird bath under direct sunlight will let the water evaporate fast. Therefore, you should try to keep the bird bath in a shady area.

If you are careful, then you can buy the right kind of bird bath and also maintain clean water in it. You will have a flock of birds visiting you all the time.
