How to Build Your Own Paintball
This article deals with the method of making paintball vests on your own. Before going deep into the process, let us first understand what a paintball vest actually is. This particular vest is a garment that helps in serving two purposes. First is that the pockets of such vests help the players in carrying their necessary equipment such as ammunition and maps and the other function is that its padding protects the upper body of a player from a close paintball hit. One can make this garment from various materials provided you take care that the fabric is durable and heavy. Have a look at the below mentioned step by step guide that can help you in making your own paintball vest:
- Let us first make the pattern of the back of the vest. This can be done by measuring the widest part of your chest with a measuring tape. Now divide this number by two and add three inches to this measurement. Write the number down. This is the width of the vest.
- Use a measuring tape to measure the length from top of your shoulder to below the waist. Now add two inches to this measurement. This will serve as the length of the vest.
- Spread out some papers and smooth out their wrinkles. Start cutting a rectangle of the same measurements as the length and width of your vest. If you find that the paper is not big enough then you can use two pieces of papers together.
- Use the measuring tape to measure the distance from the top of your shoulder to the place where your armhole would be positioned and add one inch to the measurement.
-
Take the paper rectangle and fold it half lengthwise. Notice the non-folded edge and mark off the distance from the top of the paper to the armhole. Now draw a curved line from the top to this mark that you just made. This is the armhole of the vest. - Start measuring the distance from the shoulder to the base of your neck. This distance has to be marked at the top of the vest pattern starting with the non folded edge. Measure two inches from the top of the paper and make a mark there. Then draw a curved line that connects these two marks and forms the neckline of your paintball vest.
- The next step will involve the cutting out of the openings for arm and neck and unfolding the paper. This will form the back of your vest.
- Let us now make the front pattern of the vest. The back pattern of the vest in paper needs to be folded in half lengthwise and then placed on a second piece of paper.
- Now start tracing the pattern drawing armholes that are a little further in and create a deeper neckline. The neckline is your personal choice. You can either create a U shaped one or a V shaped one.
- In the area opposite to the armhole, you have to add two inches more of material that will help in creating an overlap in the area where the vest will close.
- Now cut out the pattern and unfold the paper.
- This pattern has to be now pinned to the vest material and the pieces need to be cut. You have to repeat this process for quilted fabrics.
- Now by matching the quilted pieces to their outer vest counterparts you will have to sew them together that create individual padded vest pieces. Pin up these vest pieces together and then sew its sides with triple seams.
- The shoulder seams will also need to be sewed with triple seams. You can support the neckline and armholes with the help of double stitched bias tape.
- Now pin up ½ an inch of raw edges in the front and triple stitch it from top to bottom. It is your choice if you want to add zippers, buttons or Velcro.
- The Velcro squares also have to be triple stitched to the front and the back of the vest.
- Your paintball vest is ready to be used!
