How to Build Fences

How to Build Fences How to Build FencesFences are always built to enhance the appearance of your house and the garden. By building fences, you can provide your garden with both security and privacy. But the choice of the exact design of fence suitable for your property depends on a number of options. You can always select a specific design based on its form and functionality. The form covers the stylish and attractive appearance, whereas the functionality covers the practical purpose of building the fence. You can find a wide variety of fences available in the market, made with different materials and components. Many people prefer to install a fence made using weather boards because of its ability to remain unaffected during various seasons and weather.

Instructions

  1. Before building the fence, you will be required to create an outline to install the fence. You can always draw a line based on the size and structure of the property. However, you must avoid encroach the property not under your ownership, as the same may result in alteration and relocation after the initial installation of the fence.
  2. The height of the fence depends mainly on the purpose of its construction. Many people build picket fences with a height of about 3 feet, while others make live stock fences with a height of about 4 feet. But if you are building fences to achieve a higher level of privacy, you need to consider increasing the height to about 6 feet. You need to be sure about the style, height, and design of the fence you are planning to build, because you have to purchase the fencing equipments based in these factors.
  3. Now you have to mark the exact point to install the end posts. Normally, end posts are placed at the end as well as on various corners along the fence. You can now start digging post holes with the use of post hole diggers. Ensure that the holes are deep enough to hold and support the fence structure in a proper manner. The depth of the post holes has to be determined based on the height and type of the installed fence along with the condition of soil. You can dig holes with 30 inches depth and place the end posts inside the holes. Use dirt or cement to fill in the spaces around the posts.
  4. Now you can pull a building line at equal heights above the ground by covering the space between two posts. Dig intermediate holes by aligning the same across the fence. Keep an equal gap of about 8 inches between two end posts and dig the required holes in a center to center manner. Now place the posts at equal distance from the top of each building line drawn to install the posts. Pack the posts firmly by covering the backfill areas.
  5. If you want to achieve privacy through the installed fence, you can further nail stringers or boards with galvanized nails. These boards must cover the space between the posts on top, center and bottom of each post. Now the fence is built and installed. You can apply some weather proof paint to make the fence attractive and long lasting.
