How to Build a Motor
There are different types of motors that we come across everyday. Out of those, electric motor is a very simplified version of motors found in computer disk drives, household appliances, power tools, industrial fans and many of the other devices like machine tools and pumps. The working of an electric motor depends on the current-carrying conductors and magnetic fields. Through the application of these components, it carries electrical energy to produce mechanical energy. An individual can build an electric motor quite effectively even without having much knowledge about the electrical components.
But there are some definite ways that holds good while building your own electric motor. Such factors and points are discussed in brief in the following steps: -
- Before you even begin with the project, there are a few materials that will be required during the building process. A masking tape, thin copper wire or magnet wire, plastic cup, Styrofoam, driller, sandpaper, battery, cardboard tube, markers, scissors etc are some of the common materials.
- In the first step an individual should try to wrap the edges of the copper wire or magnetic wire. You can use the masking tape for this purpose. Give the shape of a coil using this thin magnetic wire by twisting and stretching. Leave a few inches towards both the ends of this wire while wrapping it around the cardboard tube.
- Now be very careful while pulling this magnetic coil off the cardboard tube. Next, tie both the ends of the coil so that it appears like the shape of a ring. As we all know that a magnetic wire is capable of carrying current. So insulate a few inches on both the sides of the wire with a masking tape. This will insulate the wire ends for holding it safely. Using scissors cut off the excess part from this ring shaped magnetic wire.
- It is very important to make the base of the motor thick and strong. So that it can hold the frame quite effectively. Use the driller to poke four small holes in the plastic cup or Styrofoam. But make sure that both the holes should be perfectly in opposite directions. In the same way poke the holes on the other side of the cup as well. The holes should have a depth of at least an inch from both top and bottom.
- Measure the wire which should be at least triple the height of the Styrofoam or plastic cup before cutting it with scissors. Now thread the wire inside the cup through the holes. On the closed end of the Styrofoam place a magnet from outside. To hold the outside magnet, place another magnet from the inside of the frame. Sand both the ends of the wires using sandpaper which are tied to the base of the Styrofoam. Connect the battery after holding the frame in a tilted position.
- But make sure the other end of the coil should touch the support when the coil is brought near the magnet. Use markers to coat the other end of the magnetic coil. Now for the proper working of the motor, connect the battery carefully.
- Observe that both the ends are connected to the positive and negative terminals of the battery to complete the circuit. This is necessary for the flow of current through the magnetic wire. Insulate the ends to prevent any leakage of current using a masking tape.
All these are the necessary steps that an individual should observe while building an electric motor. But some minor adjustments may be required so you should also follow an instruction manual meant for connecting the different parts of the motor.
