How to Build a Fire Pit
What can be more soothing than relaxing around an open fire on a cool summer night? Be it grownups or kids, open fire is something that excites all. Sitting near the warm flames and watching it dance, while sipping a hot cup of coffee or toasting a marshmallow over the fire can be real fun. So, if you really wish to light up, then do it your style. Build a fire pit in your yard and enjoy the cool evenings with your loved ones.
Instructions
- The very first thing you need to do is to select a location for your fire pit. Prefer a spot that is away from trees and buildings and other things that could catch fire. Also make sure that the spot does not have any underground wires or pipes. Go for a level land, though you can also build a fire pit in a slight slope.
- Place a stake right in the middle of the ground where you wish to put your fire pit. Now tie a string to the stake and place a nail nearly about 1 1/2 to 2 feet away from the stake.
- Scrape a circle around the stake and mark the line.
- Now build the base of the pit. For this, dig out a hole of 1 ½ ft depth in the ground, with a total diameter of four ft.
- After that, cover the hole with two inches of gravel. Remember to spread the gravel evenly. In case your fire pit is on a slope add more gravel to one side in order to level the bottom. This gravel covering will help the fire pit drain.
- Also add few inches of sand on top of the gravel. This addition of sand will prevent any fire from spreading to root (under the pit).
- Now surround the fire pit with two rows of concrete pavers such that they are stacked on top of one another. Make sure to dry stack the pavers so that it becomes easy for you to replace any that might break. Avoid use of adhesive to bind the pavers because it will melt and emit fumes that could be toxic.
Now your fire pit is ready to be used. Light the fire in your fire pit in the evening and sit back and have fun.
Tips to Remember
- It is always good to have some gallons of water or your garden hose near your fire pit so that you can use them in case of emergency.
- To enhance the beauty of the pit you can use some irregular and decorative rocks or stones instead of pavers for the edging. Do not use stones from pond or stream because they may contain some water particles which when heat up may lead to explosion of stones.
