How to Build a Canoe
If you wish to go fishing in your own canoe, why not build it? Building a canoe is an easy task and can be made in about a week.
You will need wood. Birchwood is more lasting than marine ply. So try purchasing Birchwood than any other ply. You will need resin adhesive, wires, a drill machine, nails, screws, a saw, wood shaver and varnish or paint.
Cut two pieces of 10 feet wood for the side panels of the canoe. You will need a part for the bottom too. Take exact measurements for the bottom sheet according to how wide you want it to be. Keep in mind how many people the canoe do you desire to accommodate. Always keep the canoe wide since narrow boats tend to over turn faster. Broader boats stay put longer.
Once you have cut the side panels give them an oblong or slope like shape and fix them at the end. Drill some holes and fix them with cables and wide glass fiber tape.
Now fix the bottom sheet. First drill holes onto the bottom sheet edges and along the sides of the side panels.
Now fix with screws using a screw driver. Drill holes and fit screws and bolts. Apply adhesive resin and stick the bottom sheet before you fix the screws. Seal all the seams with the wide glass fiber tape.
Once the canoe is fixed on all sides that are both the ends and the bottom you can make seating arrangements within the canoe. You can fix a divider like wood pole in the centre that will help two people row the canoe. You can even make a mini deck if you would like to have one with a small piece of wood. Fix it any of the sides.
Let the canoe dry completely. Once it is sun dried. Apply wide glass fiber tape on the exterior of the seams too.
Let the exteriors too dry out completely. Before you set rowing in the stream test your canoe completely to check for any kind of loop holes you may have missed.
How to make a fiberglass canoe
It is advisable to build a fibreglass canoe only if you have a kit to make on or a mould. Cover your mouth and nose when you set to work to avoid any kind of respiratory hazards. You may find a kit in a local hardware store.
Ensure you wear protective gloves when you are building your canoe, wood or fibreglass. Also wear safety goggles to keep your eyes safe from any mishap.
Add a cross bar on both sides of the canoe to keep it strong and fixed well.
Finally, you can smoothen out rough edges with a wood shaver. Use sand paper to make the canoe smooth and shiny. Now apply varnish all over the canoe or simply paint it.
Once you have tested your canoe, you can take your child fishing or simply row away into solitude. Good Luck!
