How to Braid Cornrows
You must have seen several African men and women having cornrows as a typical hairstyle. It has a completely different look and you can’t help wondering how many hours of patient effort have gone into it. You can do it too if you can spare the time to do it. Your hair stylist can also do the job for you. But you need some skill to master the art of braiding cornrows. You can easily learn how to braid cornrows and also avoid making some common mistakes so that you get a wonderful hairdo.
- First of all, you need to decide what your head should look like after the good work of braiding cornrows has been done. You can think of a design, draw it out on a sheet of paper or even practice it on a wig holder. The most common method is to use 4-6 sections of hair from the front to the back of the head.
- The hair should be free from all tangles. Spray some water mixed with a detangler and then comb the hair. Don’t wet the hair too much. The water in the hair helps to apply the required amount of tension in the hair without putting too much pressure on the scalp. Wet hair contracts and dry hair expands. So this is the best way to braid the hair and keep it tight. Pulling too hard will only damage the hair.
- Take a section of the hair that you would like to start with. Clip the hair on the two sides so that they don’t get in the way. Define a clear path and start the cornrow. Take only a little hair at the hairline so that you don’t have to pull too much.
- Further divide the small section of hair into three segments and start just as you
would tie a normal braid. - Hold two strands aside and take a little hair from the head and add to the third segment. Merge this hair with the middle strand so that you end up with 3 segments of hair strands only. Braid normally again.
- You can go on doing this by adding a little more hair to the middle segment of hair and braiding again. Finally, you will come to the back of the head and run out of hair. After you reach this stage, braid normally as you would in a 3-strand braid.
- When you reach the end, secure with a clip or any other thing that you fancy. Just make sure that you don’t use a common rubber band which will cause hair fall when you take it out.
You can repeat the steps for the rest of the hair and create as many cornrows as you feel like. Usually, people tend to keep these cornrows for at least a week. Once you get used to doing cornrows, you can think of several other patterns and hairstyles which will make you look more beautiful. Enjoy your new look and have a great time.
