Often people have the misconception that waiting on people is a very easy job. However it may appear to be a happy and easy job, waiting on people is indeed a very difficult job to take up for sure. If you just take up the job of a waitress without giving it much thought, you are in for the worst nightmare of your life. The job can be as tricky as walking on a single rope. But in case you really want to go for this job, then here are some tips to help you out with your job and put you on the favorite list of waitress by your customers.

Be Friendly

Once you overcome your limitations and start taking things in a jovial friendly manner, you make your first score. The customer is not an alien so take them as you would to your friends, only here your friendliness is lined by professionalism. That makes your friendliness balanced not overly friendly or unfriendly. Make your customers at ease and make them feel at home. When you take your job to be fun and enjoy speaking to customers in a light mode, you would notice the tiresome job also appears pleasant.

Smile

The saying goes that you are never fully dresses until you wear your smile and it is the most precious gift you can give someone in a day. The first thing the customer notices in your face in your smile. Don’t smile so much that it hurts your cheeks and looks superficial and cheesy. It is important to look happy and cheerful. Though you may find this to be difficult, it always helps to get a customer in a better mood when you appear smiling and welcoming. A blank face may leave the customer off for the rest of the time in the restaurant.

Learn your Menu

Remember the menu inside out and what your restaurant offers is just on the tip of your tongue to help the customer place the order. Also, you must understand the taste and ingredients of the dishes as you may face customers who ask questions about specific dishes. It would not be nice, if you have just a negative response on that. Also if you are aware of the combinations of dishes that go well, you can promptly make the customer choose and you would be praised at the end of the delicious meal for your suggestions.

Be Attentive and Polite

Just maintain a perfect balance on waiting on them in between the dish to make sure they do not have any other orders to place. Filling the empty glasses in between would give them the feeling of being attended to. If the customers have kids, be attentive to them as well. Kids may prove a nuisance at a table but be polite as they are also your customers so learn how to make them enjoy the lunch or dinners with the dishes kids love the most.

Proper Timing

If a particular dish takes longer time, then inform the customers before hand and offer them cocktails or drinks to fill in the gap between the dishes. Do not force the customer to place an order but persuade them sweetly to wait for the dish to arrive. If the customers get impatient try and see if you can provide some complimentary dishes so that their course of meal is not disturbed. Also the right time to give them bill is when the customers have finished their desserts. But before processing the bill, as the customers if they want anything else and if the answer is negative, inform them that you would get their bill.

Carry Neat Appearance

Your looks are equally important when you want to make a good impression with the customer. You need not dress like a cherry pie but, you must look neat without any smoke smell about you. Use proper deodorants that are mild as heavy perfumes can make some customers nauseate and put them off completely.

Finally, if you follow the basic principle of the customer being always right, you would get more customers for your restaurants and get heavier tips each time as well.
