The kitchen is your base in the restaurant. You will mainly be involved in three activities when you are working there. You will have to listen carefully to what the customer says and convey his orders to the kitchen, bring him the food and refreshments that he desires and then clear the table and take back to the kitchen everything that is there on the table once the customer has his fill and has paid for the meal. You must try to do these three things efficiently and in the shortest time possible so that you can attend to more tables.
You should be alert and observant at all times. You have to look out for people signaling to you even when you are engaged in serving someone. A customer hates it when he signals to you and you behave as if you have not heard or seen him. Don’t daydream while on an assignment and try to be available for as many people as possible.
Even if no one is calling out to you, there is nothing wrong in making a tour around the tables to see if anyone needs anything. You don’t have to stand at any table but just be alert so that you can fulfill the wants of most people in the room. You might get someone asking for help if they find you nearby.
Try to gauge the personality of a diner when you serve him. If he a friendly person who wants to talk, you can show him your jovial side, and converse with him. On the other hand, if he an introvert, you should say only as much as asked. He will not like it if you offer extra information. There may be people who come in a group and get talking without even giving you a glance. You should not disturb such people but wait until you are called.
You should try to be helpful as you have all the information about the food which can taste good and which the diner might like. But it is important to be courteous as well so that the diner doesn’t feel that you are being overbearing.
It is necessary for you to be cheerful and in good mood. The customer will surely be influenced when he sees your happy face.
Help the customer make a choice about the food. You can suggest something which the diner might like. If he is making a bad choice then don’t encourage it. Think of the customer as a friend and give him your honest opinion.

A waiter’s job is not easy as you will have to keep people satisfied and happy. You can impress by being n your best behavior. If you can manage to be courteous, cheerful and alert, you will be an asset to the restaurant.
