Sometimes, you may do more harm than good if you decide to look after the baby robin yourself rather than take it to a wildlife rehabilitator. The most common mistake that people do when they catch baby robins is that they try to give it food thinking that it is hungry. Unless you know the right way to give liquid food to the baby, it will get asphyxiated and die. So even if you find a baby robin, you must find out first if it is alright. Most robins learn to fly all by themselves as the art is inbuilt in them. But sometimes it may be too frightened and a little bit of help from you can help it to fly away.

If you find a baby robin and you know where its nest is, you must seriously think about putting it back in its nest. Its mother can best teach it to fly. In fact, it will learn to fly from its brothers and sisters in the nest too. But if you can’t find its nest nearby then you must see that the bird gets enough warmth first. Wrap it with some towels. You should then take it to the vet or the wildlife reserves. It is illegal to find and keep a robin without notifying the authorities.

If help is not within reach then you might think of helping the bird to fly away to its nest. See if the baby robin is hale and hearty and is developing wings on its body. The baby might not have enough feathers on its body as it is too young. If you allow the baby to stand on a table, it will try to balance itself by spreading out its wings.

Take the baby robin to a room and close the doors and windows. Leave it alone and watch from one corner of the room. If the baby is about 2 weeks old, it will try to test its wings for flight. It may take off from the ground and falter and fall down. It will keep doing this for many times. Since it is still not ready to fly away, you should not let it go.

It will take a few days for the baby robin to learn to fly. During this time, you will have to think about its nutrition. If you are keeping the bay in the enclosed room, you can keep some insects which the robin might find interesting to eat. Robins eat less but feel hungry at small intervals. You must remember to provide food regularly to keep it healthy.

After about a week, you can take the baby robin to an outdoor area which is safe from other predators. The process of trying to fly and the provision of food should be continued in the same manner. Be there with the baby when it is outside. And bring it in when you come in. If you keep doing this for a few days, the robin will learn to use its wings properly and fly away one day.

You might be tempted to keep the bay robin when you find it. But you must know that it is against the law and you should always see to it that the bird returns to its natural habitat or is handed over to the wildlife authorities.

Watch a video instruction on button my baby robin
<p

First of all, you need to see the species of the bird. Then, you must identify the reason why you want to catch the bird. If it is purely out of curiosity then you might try it. But if you are planning to catch the bird and keep it in your home, then you must think twice about it. It might be illegal to do it. It is always better to take it to a wildlife rehabilitator so that they will return the bird to its natural habitat. To catch a bird, you might use several ploys and tricks. You might think of catching it in the dark as birds don’t react well in the darkness. You can also apply some glue on a surface and keep some bird feed for the bird to be attracted to. But there is also a very simple method which will help you to catch the bird and also not allow it to fly away too easily after that.

If you have a bird cage handy, you can use it to catch the bird. Even if you don’t have a cage, you can make a temporary arrangement with the help of cardboards. You can also make a box with one side and the top half open. There must be an arrangement to close these sides when the bird gets inside the box.

If you have a bird feeder then this can also come of use. There is no need to worry if you don’t have a feeder. You can also make a temporary feeder by placing a small wide mouthed plastic container by the side of the bird cage. Keep some seeds or any other bid feed which you feel the bird might be interested in.

If the bird cage has a sliding door which can be slid up and down, then it will be very helpful in catching the bird quickly. Even if the door is not a sliding one, you can also use a door which opens outward. It might be more difficult to shut it once the bird gets inside, but it is not impossible. Tie a rope around the door and catch it with your hands. You should be able to shut the door when the bird gets in.

Wait patiently for the bird to get in. The bird will be attracted to the food that you have kept beside the cage and might venture into the cage when it gets close to it. It might take a long time for this to happen and you should be prepared to wait for a long time. Eventually the bird will come to the cage.

Try sprinkling some bread crumbs or seeds inside the cage too. This will attract the bird to the food and you can close the door when it gets inside the cage. Make sure that you don’t harm the bird in nay way when you close the door. Its feathers and wings should not be ruffled and the bird should not feel terrified at the sound and the impact. Try not to catch baby birds in this way. In fact, baby birds will be too small and weak to resist if you catch them with your bare hands.

Once you catch the bird, you can take it to the wildlife reserve nearby. Do not keep the bird, especially if it is a restricted and endangered species.

Watch a video instruction on how to catch a bird
<p

Hand raising baby birds is a funny, exciting and rewarding experience for a bird owner. Proper hand raising creates strong bond of communication between you and your pet. Baby birds are so fragile to handle and needs special care and attention including constant warmth as they receive like from their mother. Whether you have adopted baby birds from a breeder or rescued from a wild, you can create a wonderful bond between each other caring attitude and craziness towards your pet. Hand raise a baby bird is a very simple and easy process. You can adopt it by following useful hints:

Do not hand raise before four weeks

Do not bring the baby bird from their parents before a period of minimum three or four weeks. It is seen that baby birds living with their parent are more strong and healthy than the birds hand raised by their owners. So, try to remove the baby bird from the parent birds after two to three weeks. Babies who spend the first couple weeks with their mother tend to be healthier than those who are privileged from the warmth.

Place in safe surroundings

Place the baby in safe surroundings, such as a high wall wooden box or glass tank. You may keep a heated water bottle wrapped in a towel in the tank with the bird to keep it warm like a mother bird. Birds which are not yet grown their feathers will need more warmth than babies that have sprouted feathers. Some baby birds need an environment heated to minimum 70 degrees Fahrenheit, temperature but avoid overheating the atmosphere, as this could kill your baby bird later. Hold your baby bird safely and securely in the palm of your hand with your fingers and palm cupped around the body. It gives a sense of tenderness and security. Feed your bird between appropriate time gap using bird formula guidelines. Stroke an eyedropper with the pre measured amount of formula mix to the left side of their beak. The bird will begin bobbing his head and lapping at the formula. Do not force the bird to eat, as this could make your baby sick. Wait the bird to e familiarize with your eating instructions.

Monitor sickness

Monitor the baby bird for distress and sickness carefully. This may include abnormal skin patches, broken feathers, failure to gain weight or excess weight, abnormal stool, excess vomiting and discoloring. If the bird displays any of these conditions take to any veterinary hospital and give a good treatment immediately.

Develop regular feeding habit

Develop a regular feeding habit to your baby bird. Feed them at least four times in a day during initial times till they are only four weeks. Note each feeding time and quantity that will help you further feedings in a day long. You can skip two feeding and give them only two times when they reach at six weeks. They do not need more feeding as they requires before.

Watch a video instruction on hand feeding baby racing pigeons
<p

You need to keep the environment clean where the birds live and also make sure that the food that they eat is free from mold or fungus. Most often you use bird feeders to place the bird food. But if you are not particular enough to notice if the bird has its food or if some particles of food are still left over, there are chances that mold will develop on the feeders and the remaining food. Also make sure that the seeds you give the bird is fresh and not moldy. Molds can be very dangerous for the birds as they lead to many diseases. Therefore, you should give clean food on clean bird feeders.

Bird feeders need to be cleaned once in a month. You must inspect the feeders before and after heavy rains. You must be sure that the seeds are dry for the birds to eat. If the feeders are getting affected by the rainfall, then you need to change its position. If you make sure that there is no moisture in the feeder, there is very little chance that molds will develop.

If the bird feeder is kept at a place where it is exposed to sun, rain and wind, you should be very careful when you place the food. Give a small amount initially and see how much time the birds take to finish the food. You can increase the amount slowly to see the amount which is necessary for the hens. Stop when you find that the food is remaining behind in the feeders. Also, you can keep shifting the place of keeping the feeder so that the bird droppings don’t accumulate too much in one place.

The feeders should be cleaned with hot water and soap. After rinsing the feeder with plain water, you can immerse it in a dilute bleaching solution. Again rinse with plain water and allow the feeder to dry completely. Clean your hands before and after cleaning the feeders.

You should never pile on food in the feeder and let the birds finish it over a period of time. There will be moisture in the feeder and food which will lead to mold development. If there is rain or snow, the food will also be wasted. It is much better if you can give the food at regular intervals throughout the day and clean the feeder if there is remaining food after a particular interval of time.

You might use a tube or a hopper feeder if you want the food to remain safe from inclement weather conditions. But these tube feeders also need to be cleaned regularly or they will gather mold. Dump the feeder to get rid of the uneaten food in it and then refill it with fresh food.

The basic principle behind keeping mold away from the bird feeders is cleanliness. You must keep an eye on giving fresh food to the birds and on cleaning the feeder regularly so that no molds develop on it. This will keep the birds healthy and happy.

Watch a video instruction on feeder fresh for a clean bird feeder
<p

Lofts are open and well-ventilated that attracts birds that are ready to nest. Removing birds from your loft cautiously and humanely is essential if you want to keep your home and family as healthy as possible. As they are too delicate to handle make them out so carefully. It needs some attention and carefulness to remove birds from loft. A few hints are given under:

Close all entrance with steel net

Seal all entryways with steel net wire or caulk. A bird enter lofts through open windows, doors and even through small holes or cracks in the roof; therefore, seal all hidden openings and small holes on your roof. It minimizes the birds coming inside and finds a space between the lofts. If you leave any entrance they may run and pass through it.

Set out live traps

Place the live trap as close as possible to the birds’ nesting area or in locations where you have already noticed recent bird droppings in the loft. Put some birdseed into the live trap as bait to attract the bird. Take the captured bird outer and cautiously release it back into the wild. Live traps can be purchased at hardware stores and available to any time during the seasons. The loft of birds can be sometimes hazardous and you need to be very careful while removing birds out of it. Go by some guidelines and ask experience bird groomers for gaining extra knowledge upon it.

Investigate bird nest removal

Since birds are harmless repellants birds loft can be annoying and a potential health hazard. The birds are noisy and their small babies continuously crying and the dropping can lead to numbers of health problems. Though it may seems like any major problem, there are some measures that you can take to get rid off the birds from their loft. Research your state’s laws for bird nest removals. Some states have very strict laws. Occasionally the concern focuses on what type of birds are in the loft rather than birds in universal. Wait until you prepare nesting and watch till it is finished. Removing the adult birds can cause the babies to die. Parents will not go near their infants after humans have handled them, so the babies require being capable to fly and make it on their own before they are removed.
Scare the birds away and in many cases, the birds can be chased with loud noise or yet, scare crows. Allow the birds to leave naturally. Most of the birds will migrate with the seasons. A bird comb will prevent the birds from reentering on loft.

Use bird spikes

Bird spikes are used generally to deter birds from lading and roosting. Place the bird spikes on the roof ledges closet to your roof. Birds spike are harmless and can be buy in any place with reasonable shape and size. Some birds are small in size and they need to be released from the loft immediately after some times they live in and inside the loft.

Watch a video instruction on young bird loft
<p

Egg-laying hens often don’t eat enough during egg production time, especially when they are caged. Apart from hens, this disease can also affect ducks and turkeys. When they hens don’t get enough nutrition, their legs get bowed due to soft bones. It cannot stand or walk properly after that. To prevent the ones from getting soft, the hens need to be given the right dose of calcium and phosphorus. Even if the hens get affected by this disease and it can be diagnosed in the early state; giving them enough nutrients can make them well again.

Bird feed should be fortified with calcium and phosphorus. Le the ratio of calcium to phosphorus is 2:1. This is the right amount needed by the hens and this can cause proper bone calcification. In your enthusiasm to keep the hens healthy, you should not give them more nutrients than necessary as this can other diseases like rickets. The hens have a certain requirement for the nutrients and you should not exceed it or give less.

Fortify the bird feed with Vitamin D3. This vitamin is very helpful in regulating the absorption of calcium by the hens. If the hens are already affected by the cage layer fatigue, then you should increase the does by 3-4 times of the normal dosage. This will help the calcification to be quick which will make the hens recover soon.

It is very important that the food and water container of the hens should be clean. There should be no mold or fungus in them. There are toxins in molds and fungi which can be harmful for the hens. These toxins will disturb the absorption of calcium by the hens. The food that you give the hens should be consumed by 4 hours. If not, you should remove it. If left in the containers for longer, it will be contaminated by molds and fungus which can again be harmful for the hens.

The hens tend to develop cage layer fatigue as they are cooped up inside and are not able to exercise their limbs. If you let the hens out from their coops and leave them in the open, they will get a lot of exercise. If they are already affected by the diseases, exercising will help them recover faster.

If you pay heed to these instructions, you can prevent cage layer fatigue. The hens need the right kind of food fortified with nutrients to be able to lay eggs. They want to be free to move about and not be caged up during egg production. If you realize this in advance then you can prevent the disease. Even if you find symptoms of the disease in the hens, you can take corrective measures as given in these instructions. You will find the hens healthy once again. Don’t forget to keep the area clean as this can have a bearing on any kind of diseases in the hens.

Watch a video instruction on raising chickens : diagnosing chicken diseases
<p

The birds should be healthy and you should take care that they remain clean and disease-free. Birds are very prone to viruses and tend to fall sick very often. A sick bird also infects all the other birds in the aviary. Therefore, you have to make sure that you pay attention to the food, water and cleanliness of the aviary and the birds so that they don’t fall sick.

Food and Water Containers – Try to buy glass, plastic or stainless steel containers for the birds. These are much easier to clean. It is better if you can afford to keep two sets of containers so that the birds can eat and drink from one set while the other is being cleaned. You should never change the container of one bird with another. Try to wash the containers with warm water and soap on a daily basis. Thoroughly rinse the containers well, including the bottom. Then immerse the containers in bleach to clean them further.

Water – The water should be changed daily or as often as you can. Since bacteria might be present in the initial water that is there in the pipes, let the water flow fro the taps for some time before filling the containers. Although this bacteria is not harmful to humans, it can affect the birds. If possible, you can use filter water for the birds to drink.

Food – If you are giving the birds soaked seeds, then cleanse the seeds well with a proper cleanser. Rinse well. If you have sprouted the seeds, then cleanse them well too and then rinse them in clean water. The food material that you have served the birds with should not remain in the aviary beyond 4 hours.

Attendants – Anyone entering the aviary should have clean hands and shoes. Use a cleanser on your hands and spray them before you attempt to feed any bird in the aviary. Do this every time you enter the aviary.

Cage Surfaces – The cage surfaces should be cleaned every week with a cleansing gel. Dilute the gel with some hot water and apply on the cages. Allow the cleanser to do its work and wipe it off after 5 minutes. All the exposed surfaces in the aviary should be cleaned in this way. If you have covered the floor of the cage with newspaper, then replace it every week.

Perches – If you have perches in the aviary then you should also clean them every fortnight. Use a stiff brush with hot water and soap. Rinse the perches well and bleach them. Again rinse with water and keep them back in their places.

Cages – To clean the cages, you have to remove the birds from them first. You can do this every month. A stiff brush, hot water and soap is enough to clean the cages. You can then rinse with water, bleach and rinse with water again. Make sure that the birds are nowhere near the chemicals. Let the cages dry out well before you let the birds back into them.

The entire aviary should be cleaned from time to time. If the birds can be taken to another place, then you can use chemicals for cleansing and bleaching the different parts of the aviary. If not, then you can use plain water and soap and scrub with a stiff brush. If you are very particular about keeping the aviary clean, you can prevent the birds from getting any diseases.

Watch a video instruction on bird disease/creature

<p

The cage should be large enough for the bird to move about freely inside it. You should not have a small cage as the bird might not feel comfortable if it is not able to move about freely. The food that you provide to the bird must also be healthy and desired by the bird. Birds of different species can have a preference for different types of foods so you should find out from a vet about the food habits of the humming bird before feeding it. You should also make sure that you protect the bird from diseases. The bird is not prone to many diseases but in case you find that it has fallen sick, you should take it to a vet immediately. If there are many other humming birds with you, you should take the sick bird to another place so that the others don’t get infected.

This is true in case you have a humming bird at home. But what happens when you find a baby on the streets, in the bushes or underneath a tree? You should know the right way to take care of the bird so that you can keep it alive. The best course open to you is to hand over the baby bid to the wildlife rescue team but before that you should whatever you can to keep it alive. If you are unaware of a few things, you might accidentally kill the bird

If possible, handle the bird with clean hands. If you have soap and water handy, then wash your hands clean and then pick up the baby. Dirty hands may soil the bird and also infect the bird later on.

When you find the bird, you can easily guess what its age might be if you are have ever studied the bird’s features before. When the baby is under 10 days old, it is usually greyish in color and has no feathers. It is extremely small and cannot even open its eyes. When it grows to about 15 days, it will slowly develop feathers that look like spikes. The baby will have all its feathers by the time it is 21 days old. But the tail feathers will still be short and the bill is very small too.

As with all baby birds, you should attempt to keep the baby humming bird warm before you do anything else. To do this, you can take a small plastic container and line it with tissue paper. Carefully put the baby bird in it. Now that you have given it a place to rest, you should give it warmth. You can either place a lamp or bulb near the container or place the container near the heater. Make sure that the baby receives enough warmth but not too much. The baby bird needs to be kept at about 90 degrees Fahrenheit. If you overheat the place, the bay will not be able to handle it and will die.

Now that the baby humming bird is warm, you can think of giving it some food. Make a dilute sugar solution and try to feed the baby. Take some of the solution in a small dropper and try to make the baby have it. Gently help the baby to put its bill into the dropper and you will see it having the liquid on its own. You can do this after every 30 minutes. Doing this for a day will help you to keep the bird alive until you can take it to the nearest vet or the wildlife center. If the baby is too small, you should just keep it warm and take it to a vet.

You should keep the baby humming bird alive if you can. You will surely feel very happy that you have saved a life.

Watch a video instruction on baby humming bird
<p

If it is serious, then you should not waste time trying to revive it or in doing something yourself. It is very important that the vet or an expert in bird health looks at the baby robin. But if the bird is alive and well and only soiled, you might want to bathe the baby robin and get rid of the dirt from its body. However, there is a certain way of bathing the bird. If you are not careful, you might cause the death of the baby robin or leave it in a worse condition than before.

When you find the baby robin, see if it is shivering with cold. If it is trembling a lot, that could mean that it is frightened and could go into shock. This could be fatal for the baby robin. So the first thing you should do when you find it is give it enough warmth. Even when you think of bathing the bird, you have to keep it warm at all times.

After all it is a small baby and hence you can clean it up first with a damp towel instead of introducing it into the water directly. Take some warm water and wet the towel. Squeeze it dry and then wipe the body of the bird with the damp towel. Start wiping the bird at its head and proceed towards its tail. Don’t wipe in the reverse direction. Its feathers should not be ruffled. It is better to use only clean water with no soap or detergent.

The baby robin might feel asphyxiated if it finds droplets of water on its face. So make sure that the bird does not get any water on its face. Don’t make the mistake of making a bird bath and dipping the bird in it. It will not be able to sustain the shock. Once you spot clean the bird with the towel, you can give it some warmth. Wrap it in a dry towel and place it near a heater. You can use paper sheets instead of towel and keep changing it when it gets wet. Keep doing this until the bird dries up completely. You have to stay with the bird until it is dry and alright.

If you find the baby robin soiled too much, you should take it to the nearest vet or wildlife rescue center so that the experts can deal with the situation. It is always advisable to bathe a robin only when you are sure that it is healthy and alive. If you have any doubts about its survival, you should never attempt to bathe it. The only thing you should do is keep it warm until you can contact the vet. This is the best way to deal with the situation. In fact, you should do this for any bird that you may find away from its nest.

Watch a video instruction on baby robin bath
<p
