Doctors have proved that snoring and sleep apnea have some common signs and symptoms that include: concentration problem, memory loss, short temperedness, sleeping while at work and fatigue. Incase you find that either you or your partner has any of the above symptoms then sleep apnea might just be the reason for it. Keep in mind that diagnosing the problem correctly and at the right time can be very helpful towards solving it. The doctor might require you to undergo a physical exam and a sleep study that can help you in knowing the exact cause behind your suffering from sleep apnea. Knowing the patient’s history will also be important from the doctor’s point of view for understanding the cause of sleep apnea. Sleep study requires the positioning of sensors at strategic parts of the patient’s body. This helps in measuring the oxygen level, heart rate, breathing rate and several other such functions.</li><li> One way that is extremely effective for stopping snores is to change the sleeping habits of the person involved. Many a times it is noticed that sleeping on your side rather than on your back, reduces snoring a lot. This happens because the blockage of the throat that happened due to gravity gets prevented. You can also try using a large pillow so that you do not roll onto your back while sleeping. Take your partner into confidence while trying to reduce snoring. He/she can help you a lot in this matter.</li><li> Make sure that you do not take large amounts of alcohol. There are certain medications also that aggravate snoring and sleep apnea. Medications like sleeping pills and sedatives help in relaxing the throat muscles thereby increasing the frequency of snoring while sleeping. Another thing that needs to be kept in mind is that one should not drink alcohol just before sleeping. Try and keep a gap of at least 4 hrs between your drinks and sleep. Smoking is another factor that increases the rate of snoring as it blocks the nasal passages that in turn trigger snores.</li><li> Try and lose weight. In most cases there is a direct proportion between snoring and being overweight. Obesity can be a major reason behind excessive snoring. This is so because, the extra weight that is present around inner throat makes it loose and thick and that in turn makes the throat structures to flop around. This makes breathing difficult and triggers snoring. Follow a daily regime of exercises that can help you in losing weight and enable you to lower the rate of snores.</li><li> Medical conditions like sinusitis or even a simple blocked nose can result in snoring. Make sure that you consult a doctor immediately and take proper medications for it. Incase your body has a previous injury that has deformed the nose or its surrounding structures, snoring can be the byproduct.
