  • Make sure that you are covering as much of your skin as possible while getting rid of poison ivy. You will have to wear a long sleeved shirt, gloves, pants and boots. Do not leave any part of your skin exposed as there might be chances of your skin coming in contact with the poison ivy while removing it. Prevention is always considered better than cure.
  • While you go outside to your yard to remove the poison ivy remember to take the sprayer, a large trash bag, hedge clippers and the black plastic tarp along with you.
  • You have to start by using the hedge clippers to cut down any vines that you find have wrapped around trees and other objects. Keep in mind that as and when you cut those vines with the hedge clippers, you have to trash them directly in the trash bag. Any small and young poison ivy plants can be pulled up directly by the roots and trashed in the garbage bag.
  • Now you have to use the salt solution in the sprayer to be sprayed directly over the poison ivy plants. Try aiming for the base of the plants while spraying the solution. However be careful not to spray the solution on any other vegetation nearby as salt can kill everything that it touches.
  • After you have sprayed the poison ivy plants with the salt solution, you have to place the black plastic tarp over the plants. You can also use rocks or small stones to hold them down. This tarp will prevent the sunlight from reaching the poison ivy and will also act as a warning signal for others not to go near it. You have to keep in mind that poison ivy can be dangerous even after it is dead.
  • Now place the trash bag that you are holding directly onto the garbage can. After doing so you have to immediately remove the outer clothing that you are wearing and put them in the washing machine. You have to take a shower immediately by using dish soap instead of the regular soap. This is because dish soap has the capacity of removing urushiol oil i.e. the oily resin which causes rashes in the skin from your body.
  • You shall have to wait for several days before removing the tarp to see if the poison ivy is dead or not. While doing so also you have to keep your body covered with protective clothing.
  • It is strongly advised not to burn poison ivy plants for the purpose of getting rid of them. This is because the smoke coming out of the plants can be extremely dangerous if inhaled and can also turn fatal in some cases.
