• The ingredients should be brought to one place first before beginning the process. The reactants to be used are sodium hydroxide (drain cleaning crystals), 1 meter of aluminum foil and water. You also need a glass bottle and some balloons. Safety gear too is a must when you do this experiment.

If the water gets too hot, then place the bottle in a water bath so that only hydrogen escapes from the mouth of the bottle and does not get converted to steam. If the reaction is slower than normal, then you have used too little drain cleaner and aluminum foil.
• When the gas begins to escape, you need to collect it. For doing this, attach a balloon to the mouth of the bottle and secure it well as soon as you pour in the water. You will notice the balloon filling up and it will soon become lighter than air. If you tie it up and leave it free, you can be sure that it will rise up and away. You can also use solid aluminum as it produces better results than aluminum foil.
