It was created in 1994 by telecom company Ericsson. The original idea was for bluetooth devices to replace data cables. Nowadays it is used for a lot more functions and can be used to connect to multiple devices keeping synchronization intact. It basically uses short range radio waves of the frequency 2.4 Ghz. Bluetooth communication is basically in short range and the radius of communication is within 100m, based on the class of device used. Bluetooth always encrypts the data before sending it out.
Bluetooth specification and technology is licensed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) which consists of about 13000 companies. The SIG is also actively involved in the further research and development of the bluetooth technology. Any device that is sold as a bluetooth device must adhere to the standards set by the SIG.
Bluetooth communication takes place in a master-slave fashion. Before a transfer of data can begin, one device becomes the master and the other becomes the slave. In a group of devices connected via bluetooth, there is always a single master, and the rest become slaves. The master status can change from one device to another. The various services provided by the bluetooth standard are varied and are very useful, part of the reason for its stupendous success. Some of these services are hands-free device communication, wireless communication between a PC and it peripherals such as mouse, transfer of files, contacts via OBEX, connection with devices such as GPS devices, bar code reader, medical equipment, connection to the internet via a modem. Here’s how to use bluetooth.
Step 1: check whether your computer supports bluetooth or not. You can open Control Panel and if you find a bluetooth icon, then your computer already has a bluetooth adapter. So now you just have to enable the device and use it.
Step 2: in case you do not find a bluetooth icon, you have to install the bluetooth adapter driver. So insert the bluetooth adapter driver installation CD and run it. Usually bluetooth dongle devices come pacakaged with installation CD’s. On running the CD, you will have to install the drivers and the bluetooth utility, if it is provided.
Step 3: once your bluetooth is setup on the computer, you should start up your bluetooth utility. There is no generic description of the utilities, but generally you can set your device to discovery mode to detect any new devices within range. Do the same. Now you can see and select the required device. Remember to switch on the bluetooth in other devices to be connected.
Step 4: when you see the device you want to connect to, select it. Now establish a connection between your computer and the device. If the other device is another computing device like a smartphone, you will be asked to provide a secret pin to authenticate the communication. Once connected, you will be informed of all the services that the connected device can provide and their usage.
