Also, get yourself the equipments and fixtures that you would need to build a bed. The things you must get from the market are:

A saw
Some Sand Paper
Wood shine
4 Wood pieces for legs
6 Wooden battens or plywood for the mattress base
4 Wooden frames for the side rails
2 flat wood pieces for the head and foot.
2 wooden rails for head and foot support
Some Woodscrews

Remember that, you can choose the sizes you want for your bed but you must make sure that the width is minimum one third of the length. This makes the weight distribute on the bed proportionately and is less prone to breaking.

You can saw the rails first and make the frame of the bed first. After placing each piece adjacent to the other create a rectangular shape and secure them with wood screws.
Similarly fix the legs are make sure, all the four legs are of similar height so that your bed stand properly still, without tilting to one side.
Now, you can fix the head and leg pieces to the frame and secure them with the woodscrews to the wooden rails you have used to create the bed frame.
Place the wooden batten or plywood close to each other and screw 4 pieces together and use wood screws to join them so that when you open your bed, you need not take batten by batten but as a unit of four battens.
If you want to get some shine to your bed, you can apply the wood shine to make the wood look shiny and attractive.
If you want drawers to be fitted to the bed, you can get the fixtures and fix them under the bed base which would remain covered by the battens.

Though you must keep it in mind that one needs to be extremely careful while building the bed. If you need to saw any piece of wood to match the size, be extremely careful and mark it with a pencil before you saw it. you need to mark the places, you would put the wood screws in equal distance, so that you get a strong bed.
